Keep Spills and Dust Away From Your Mattress
A mattress protector won’t soften a rock-hard bed or relieve pressure on sore hips and shoulders, but a well-fitting encasement can help guard the mattress underneath. That matters in a busy bedroom, a guest room, or a dorm where spills, sweat, and dust can put a mattress at risk. The best total encasement mattress protector for your bed should cover all six sides, close securely, and match the mattress size and depth without pulling tight.
These picks focus on zippered coverage and practical care, not on adding cushioning like a memory foam mattress topper or a plush pillow top. Product specifications identify differences in mattress depth, surface fabric, waterproof layers, and included pillow protectors. Check those details against your own mattress before ordering, since an encasement that is too small can be difficult to fit and one that is too loose may shift. For separate advice on keeping a mattress topper from sliding or choosing a pressure-relieving topper, those guides cover comfort layers rather than mattress encasements.

- Non-crinkling knitted polyester keeps the sleep surface quiet during nighttime movement
- Generous pocket depth accommodates queen mattresses up to 15 inches thick
- TPU backing prevents fluid penetration to protect mattress condition and manufacturer warranties
Cons
- Installing a six-sided encasement requires lifting the entire mattress, which generally requires two people
- Impermeable TPU waterproof layers can slightly reduce airflow compared to non-waterproof cotton covers
- Requires strict low-heat drying to avoid damaging or delaminating the internal waterproof TPU backing
Utopia Bedding Full Size Zippered Mattress
The Utopia Bedding Full Size Zippered Mattress Protector provides 360-degree waterproof encasement for mattresses up to 13 inches deep, using smooth knitted polyester to shield against spills without altering your bed's underlying feel. Cons
- Maximum 13-inch pocket depth will not fit high-profile luxury mattresses measuring 14 inches or thicker
- Installing and removing a six-sided zippered cover requires lifting the entire mattress
- Requires low-heat tumble drying to prevent high-temperature damage to the waterproof membrane
Utopia Bedding King Zippered Mattress Protector
The Utopia Bedding King Size Zippered Mattress Protector provides full 360-degree waterproof encasement for standard 78 by 80-inch king beds with profile depths up to 15 inches. Pros
- Reliable 360-degree six-sided liquid barrier protects mattresses against spills, perspiration, and pet accidents.

- Stretchable fabric and wrap-around zipper keep the protector snug on mattresses up to 15 inches deep.
- Maintains your mattress's original ergonomic feel without altering firmness or contouring support.
Cons
- Maximum depth capacity caps at 15 inches, making it unsuitable for extra-thick luxury pillow-tops exceeding that height.
- Requires lifting the mattress to slip the encasement underneath and zip it, which can be challenging for a solo individual.
- Tumble drying requires strict low-heat settings to avoid potential damage to the waterproof backing layer.

FAQs
What does a total encasement mattress protector cover?
A total encasement covers the mattress on all six sides and typically closes with a zipper. The listed options describe waterproof coverage, while the Utopia Bedding models specify a wrap-around zipper. This full cover differs from a mattress pad, which usually protects only the top surface.
How do I choose the right mattress depth?
Measure your mattress thickness before buying and compare it with the product’s stated fit range. The Utopia Bedding Queen fits mattresses up to 15 inches deep, the Full model up to 13 inches, and the King model up to 15 inches. MATTSHIELD lists a 12-to-17-inch fit range.
Are these protectors waterproof on every side?
The product details describe six-sided waterproof protection for the Utopia Bedding Queen and MATTSHIELD kit. The Full and King Utopia listings describe a waterproof liquid barrier, and Four Seasons Essentials describes a six-sided zippered encasement. Review the exact listing details to confirm the barrier and closure features before purchase.
Can a mattress encasement make a firm bed softer?
No, an encasement protects the mattress but does not add a cushioning layer or change its firmness. A separate 2-inch, 3-inch, or 4-inch mattress topper may alter the feel, though a topper is not a reliable fix for deep mattress sagging. For sizing ideas for a dorm bed comfort layer, see the related topper review.
Can I wash a zippered mattress protector?
Yes, the Utopia Bedding Queen, Full, and King listings say they are machine washable and can be tumble-dried on low heat. MATTSHIELD also describes its kit as machine washable. Follow the care label for your specific item, since heat and cleaning instructions can differ by fabric and waterproof backing.
Does the MATTSHIELD kit include pillow protection?
Yes, the listed kit includes a king mattress encasement and two queen-size zippered pillow encasements. Check pillow dimensions and mattress depth before ordering so each cover fits the bedding you already own.
