Protect the mattress without changing its feel
A spill or pet accident can leave a mattress difficult to clean, while a noisy cover can make an otherwise comfortable bed feel less inviting. A zip-up protector adds a barrier around the mattress, which can be useful in a guest room, a shared bed, or a home with kids and pets. The Best Zip Up Mattress Protector options here focus on full encasement, waterproof coverage, and practical care rather than adding cushioning or changing bed firmness.
These products are protectors, not memory foam mattress toppers, so they won’t provide the pressure relief, extra loft, or spinal support of a 2-inch, 3-inch, or 4-inch foam layer. For shoulder and hip comfort, compare mattress toppers for pressure relief separately. To reduce bunching, measure your mattress depth before buying: the listed fits range from 12 inches to 16 inches, depending on the model. Product specifications also help distinguish a soft terry top from smooth knitted polyester and identify which protectors cover all six sides.
Our comparison considers the stated fit, zipper, waterproof coverage, noise, and washing instructions. A zippered encasement can help keep liquid and other unwanted substances away from the mattress, but it cannot repair a sagging sleep surface or cool a hot mattress like a purpose-built cooling pad might. Check the exact size and depth, and follow the care label so the barrier and zipper remain in good condition. If a topper shifts on your bed, see these practical tips for keeping a mattress topper in place.

FAQs
Will a zip-up mattress protector make a firm bed softer?
No, a mattress protector is a thin protective layer, not a cushioning mattress topper. It won’t add the contouring or pressure relief associated with memory foam, latex, or a pillow top. Choose a separate topper if you want to soften a firm bed or ease pressure at the hips and shoulders.
How do I choose the right mattress depth for a zippered encasement?
Measure the mattress from its base to its highest point, then match that measurement to the listed fit. The Moonsea Queen Mattress Protector Zippered,Soft fits depths of 13 to 16 inches, while the Utopia Bedding queen protector with a 12-inch pocket is intended for a shallower mattress. A correct fit helps the cover sit securely without straining the zipper.
Are these zip-up mattress protectors waterproof on every side?
Some are described as waterproof on all sides, but check each product’s specifications. Utopia Bedding Waterproof Mattress Protector Queen lists a TPU-backed barrier on all sides, and the Moonsea encasement describes waterproof coverage across the top, sides, and bottom. Confirm the exact model details before buying.
Can I machine-wash a zippered mattress encasement?
Yes, several options in this list are described as machine washable, but care instructions differ. Utopia Bedding’s queen and king encasements specify machine washing and tumble drying on low, while SafeRest specifies cold washing and tumble drying. Follow the instructions for your selected cover to avoid damaging its waterproof layer.
Will a zippered protector stop bed bugs or dust mites?
Some listed products are marketed as bed bug or dust mite protective, including Utopia Bedding’s queen encasement and its 12-inch-pocket queen model. Check the product description and ensure the cover fully fits and zips closed around your mattress. A protector does not add cooling gel, improve motion isolation, or fix a mattress with deep sagging.
